AI Integration (AI) into India's job market will enhance workforce quality, boost productivity, and create employment opportunities, stated the Economic Survey presented in parliament on Friday. The Economic Survey states, "Incorporating AI into India's job market offers a chance to boost productivity, improve workforce quality, and generate jobs, as long as systemic challenges are properly tackled through strong institutional frameworks."
The survey emphasized that integrating AI into the job market will foster economic development. Moreover, the survey indicated that integration will enhance labor market results.
"The Economic Survey noted that for India, an economy driven by services and characterized by a young, flexible workforce, embracing AI presents opportunities to enhance economic growth and better labor market results."
The survey emphasized the importance of focusing on education and skill enhancement in the nation to improve the competencies of the workforce.
Focusing on education and skill enhancement will be essential for preparing workers with the abilities required to succeed in an AI-augmented environment. By leveraging the current early stage of AI worldwide, India can equip its workforce for a future characterized by the partnership of human and machine intelligence," it further stated.
The survey noted that India’s job market expansion in recent years has been bolstered by recovery after the pandemic and a rise in formalisation. According to the 2023-24 annual Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report, the unemployment rate among those aged 15 and older has consistently decreased from 6 percent in 2017-18 to 3.2 percent in 2023-24.
