The education sector's artificial intelligence may expand into an $88.2 billion market over the next ten years. Nevertheless, advancement has been gradual, with numerous educators doubtful about AI's role in educational settings. OpenAI is sharpening its attention on the education field, which it views as a key growth opportunity.
In September, the company appointed Leah Belsky, the former chief revenue officer at Coursera, as its inaugural general manager for education, with the goal of enhancing OpenAI's visibility in educational institutions. Earlier this year, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Edu, a specific iteration of ChatGPT designed for higher education institutions.
The upcoming online course you enroll in might include a chatbot, should OpenAI's vision come to fruition. Siya Raj Purohit, a part of OpenAI’s go-to-market team focusing on education, disclosed the organization's aspirations in a fireside chat organized by Coeus Collective. OpenAI could allow e-learning educators to create tailored GPTs (generative pre-trained transformers) that work with their digital coursework.
“What I’m hoping is going to happen is that professors are going to create custom GPTs for the public and let people engage with content in a lifelong manner,” Purohit said. “It’s not part of the current work that we’re doing, but it’s definitely on the roadmap.”
Purohit noted that professors are already leveraging OpenAI’s tools to upload significant amounts of content—such as an entire semester’s material—to create custom GPTs for their students. “Students engage with that finite knowledge … (which) I think is a really powerful and good way to let them research,” she added.
